REU: Research Experiences for Undergraduates

The REU program for undergraduate research in biotechnology and bioengineering at Keck Graduate Institute provides undergraduate students the opportunity for cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research in the areas of bioengineering, computational biology, and applied molecular and cellular biology, as well as exposure to related ethics and business topics.

Funding for KGI's REU program is provided through the Engineering directorate of the National Science Foundation. The program is organized and coordinated by Angelika Niemz.

RET: Research Experiences for Teachers

The Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program at Keck Graduate Institute provides summer internship opportunities for a small number of middle and high school science teachers from Claremont or surrounding school districts who wish to learn about current scientific developments, become involved in ongoing scientific research at KGI, and leverage this experience in the development of new K12 curriculum materials.

Funding for KGI's RET program is provided through the Engineering directorate of the National Science Foundation. The program is organized and coordinated by Angelika Niemz, and by Professors Deb and Bulbul Chakravarti.

Internships for High School Students

During the summer, Keck Graduate Institute offers a limited number of unpaid internship opportunities to exceptionally motivated and academically strong high school students to gain hands on research experience, and learn about the pursuit of a science or engineering related college education and professional career. This internship program runs in parallel with our Research Experiences for Undergrauates (REU) program. High school students work under the supervision of a KGI faculty mentor, initially shadow undergraduate students and other researchers at KGI, and are then able to engage in a small, well-defined research project matched to their skills and knowledge. High school students further are able to participate in REU program activities such as seminars, workshops, and field trips.

The program is organized and coordinated by Angelika Niemz, and by Professors Deb and Bulbul Chakravarti.

Click here to access the high school student internship website.

Other K12 Activities

Keck Graduate Insitute offers a range of K12 outreach activities, supported partially by the National Science Foundation through several research and education awards to KGI.
